CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's Alinea restaurant has earned another accolade, this time named the best restaurant in North America by the S. Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards.
Chef Grant Achatz's (AK'-ets) restaurant was honored Monday, also ranking seventh on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. The ranking is three spots higher than Alinea earned last year.
Achatz's ultramodern cooking style has come to define the molecular gastronomy movement. The James Beard Foundation honored Achatz with its award as the nation's top chef in 2008.
That year, Achatz was diagnosed with Stage 4 tongue cancer and underwent aggressive treatment to save his life and sense of taste. By the end of the year, he was cancer free.
In 2006, Gourmet magazine named Alinea the best restaurant in America.
